Community support for autism

Do you have a family member with autism? Do you know a friend who has an autistic child? It is more common than you think. Roughly 1 in 31 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, includes a wide range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. There are many sub-types, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges. The cause of autism is unknown but thought to be a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Many people affected by autism also suffer from mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Bipolar disorder. They might have medical issues such as digestive issues, sleep disturbances, sensory and motor difficulties.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to creating an inclusive world for all individuals with autism throughout their lifespan. The organization does this through advocacy, services, supports, research and innovation, and advances in care for autistic individuals and their families.

Every year, Autism Speaks organizes a fundraising event nationwide at multiple cities, called The Empower Walk & 5K Run. People who are interested in supporting the autism community can register to walk or run.

The Empower Walk & 5K Run is for everyone who wants to make a difference in the autism community. Whether you choose to walk or run, participate as an individual or as part of a team.

I am the captain of team “Helpful boys” that will run 5K at the Silverado, Orange County location in California on November 1, 2025. There will be family, friends and neighbors joining me to make a difference in our community.

Join us today to be a part of something truly meaningful!
